5 Ways to Qualify Applicants

I’ve read more applicant tracking stories about keyword qualification via resume ONLY than I care to.  I’ll be the first to admit, that that using resume keywords as the sole qualifier isn’t the best way to thin your applicant pool.   So, before you simply rate an applicant based on their resume’s keywords, here are 5 other ways to qualify them.

5 Ways to Qualify Applicants Without a Resume

  1. Prescreening questions with ranking.  Ask them whatever you want (legally, that is), and rank their responses.  The result is a qualified applicant pool that is scored based on the criteria you set.
  2. Online application.  Select which information to collect and require the applicant to complete certain fields.  An online application allows you to collect information that otherwise was “selectively omitted” from their resume.
  3. Behavioral assessment.  Want to know if they have crappy customer service skills?  Send them through a behavioral assessment and let the professionals screen them out.
  4. Skills test.  Do they need to read a ruler?  Or be able to file alphabetically?  Incorporate a skills test and qualify them based on their results.
  5. Background check.
