Rank your Candidates

Not all prescreening questions are equal.  Some are black and white with yes/no question disqualifiers, while others screen for “nice to have” skills and experience.  Rather than using a blanket yes/no response system, utilize multiple response questions with ranking.  Ranking allows you to assign scores to question responses and sort applicants based on the “nice to have” criteria.  For example, you could ask:

How many years of experience do you have in engineering?

  1. No Experience
  2. 1-2 years
  3. 3-5 years
  4. More than 5 years

In this example, the applicant tracking system could apply a score of 10 to applicants with “More than 5 years” experience, and 0 to “No Experience”.

Additionally, you could ask:

How many years of experience do you have in the energy industry?

  1. No Experience
  2. 1-2 years
  3. 3-5 years
  4. More than 5 years

Etc., etc.

The point is that you could have several prescreening questions with scored answers that are used to rank the applicant pool.  In the examples above, if the applicant selected response #4 to both questions they would have a 20/20 or 100%.  Ranking allows you to quickly identify those applicants with the “nice to have” qualifications and work your way down the list without completely dismissing less qualified applicants.
