The next time you hire someone, make sure you avoid these common onboarding mistakes:
- Start the process too late. Don’t wait until the new hire is wondering around the parking lot! Start the onboarding process prior to their first day. Ideally, the onboarding process should prepare the new hire for their first day of work and continue throughout their transition.
- Paperwork mayhem. Don’t make the new hire spend their first day on the job filling out endless paperwork. Provide them with a method to complete the paperwork online in the convenience of their own home. The result is a user-friendly experience that pre-populates fields and allows them to run around the house and gather all the documentation they need. Nothing is more awkward then waiting in reception while they try to figure out what to do with you, or wondering around the building looking for a friendly face.
Be unprepared. In addition to getting the new hire onsite, where they are supposed to be, and with all the necessary paperwork, it is critical to make sure that they are actually setup to start working. Before they report in, make sure that you have the necessary:
- System logins
- Parking pass
